Commenting on Different Topics that are Posted

We will have multiple topics running on the chat and you will want to comment on a topic that might be a few posts back in the thread. I may end up creating some topical group chats in the future, but for now, use the Quote feature to connect to the topic you want to address.

Here is how you can handle it:

1

Use the "Quote" Feature

How to do it:

Long-press the message about the topic you want to comment on, then tap the Quote icon (it looks like a reply arrow or speech bubble depending on your device). Type your comment and send it.

The Result:

Threema will display a snippet of the original post right above your new comment. If anyone taps that quoted snippet, Threema will automatically scroll them back up to that exact spot in the chat history.

Copying a Specific Portion of a Post

If you want to respond to a specific portion of a post, copy/paste may be a little tricky. Here are AI instructions.

On Android

  1. 1Long-press the message containing the text you want to copy.
  2. 2Tap the Copy icon (the two overlapping rectangles) at the top of the screen.
  3. 3Instead of copying the whole thing immediately, Threema will bring up a text selection window.
  4. 4Use the selection handles to highlight just the specific section you want, then tap Copy again.
  5. 5Go to your message input field, long-press, and select Paste.

On iOS (iPhone)

Copy/paste works when you double click on a post and highlight a portion. From the iPhone, copy and paste show up as options.

But if you are working from a computer, OS handles message selections a bit differently, requiring you to copy the whole message first before trimming it down.

  1. 1Long-press the message and select Copy from the context menu to copy the entire post.
  2. 2Tap into your message input box, long-press, and select Paste to paste the entire text. If Paste does not show up, use Command V.
  3. 3Now use the iOS cursor to select and delete the parts you don't want to keep, leaving just the section you want to include.

(Alternatively, you can paste the whole message into a notes app, select the exact section there to copy, and paste that back into Threema.)
